NYTimes – The Russian Company That Is a Danger to Our Security

The Kremlin hacked our presidential election, is waging a cyberwar against our NATO allies and is probing opportunities to use similar tactics against democracies worldwide. Why then are federal agencies, local and state governments and millions of Americans unwittingly inviting this threat into their cyber networks and secure spaces?

That threat is posed by antivirus and security software products created by Kaspersky Lab, a Moscow-based company with extensive ties to Russian intelligence. To close this alarming national security vulnerability, I am advancing bipartisan legislation to prohibit the federal government from using Kaspersky Lab software.

Kaspersky Lab insists that it has “no inappropriate ties with any government.” The company’s products, which are readily available at big-box American retailers, have more than 400 million users around the globe. And it provides security services to major government agencies, including the Department of State, the National Institutes of Health and, reportedly, the Department of Defense.

The Guardian – Is it always good to talk?

We’re so accustomed to seeing talking as a source of solutions – for resolving conflicts or finding new ideas – that it’s hard to see when it is the problem.

Every office worker hates meetings. Obviously. But it’s a strange sort of hate, similar to the hatred of Londoners for the Northern line, or New Yorkers for tourists who walk too slowly: the dislike is real, yet if the despised thing were to vanish, it’d be like surrendering a piece of your soul.

“When we probed into why people put up with the strain that meetings place on their time and sanity, we found something surprising,” wrote the academics Leslie Perlow, Constance Hadley and Eunice Eun in the Harvard Business Review recently. “Those who resent and dread meetings the most also defend them as a ‘necessary evil’ – sometimes with great passion.” True, research suggests that meetings take up vastly more of the average manager’s time than they used to. True, done badly, they’re associated with lower levels of innovation and employee wellbeing. But that’s just office life, right? It’s not supposed to be fun. That’s why they call it work.

Underlying this attitude is an assumption that’s drummed into us not just as workers but as children, parents and romantic partners: that more communication is always a good thing.

NYTimes – Where Does the Time Go? You Can Find Out, if You Dare

Finding time is hard. I often think about all the things I would do if I could just find the time.

But really, what a crazy thing that is to say. Find the time? Where should I look? Did I hide it in the bushes outside the White House? Can I find it on Aisle 10 at Whole Foods next to the biodegradable toilet paper?

I’ve let this question bounce around in my head for the last few months, and I think I figured out where the time went to hide. Let me explain with a small but painful story.
